A double crochet is another common stitch in crochet and is a little taller than a single crochet stitch. Even though it has a few extra steps, it is still easy to learn with practice. Double crochet stitches help projects grow faster because they create taller rows. They are often used for scarves, blankets, and many other crochet projects.
Start with your row of chain stitches. After making your desired number of chain stitches, add two extra chain stitches. These extra chains help give enough space to start your row.
Now begin by making a yarn over, which means bringing your hook under and around the working yarn before inserting your hook into the chain. Next, insert your hook into the third chain from your hook, which looks like a small “V.”
Then yarn over again and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now see three loops on your hook.
Next, yarn over again and pull through two loops on your hook. You should now have two loops remaining.
Finally, yarn over one more time and pull through the remaining two loops.
Congratulations! You just made a double crochet stitch!
When I first learned double crochet, I sometimes forgot how many loops I needed to pull through. I learned that taking each step slowly and counting the loops on my hook made it easier.
Steps to Remember:
Make your chain stitches
Add two extra chain stitches
Yarn over
Insert your hook into the third chain from the hook
Yarn over again
Pull through the stitch
You should now have three loops on your hook
Yarn over and pull through two loops
Yarn over again and pull through the last two loops
Tips for Beginners:
✔ Count the loops on your hook
✔ Keep your yarn relaxed
✔ Practice slowly at first
✔ Don’t worry if your stitches are different sizes in the beginning
Olivia’s Tip: Double crochet looks harder than it really is. Once you practice a few times, the steps start to feel much easier!
