Turning your work is a very important part of crochet, and luckily it is also really simple. Turning your work lets you start a new row and continue building your project. Without turning your work, you would not be able to keep adding rows and make your project grow.
Let’s say you are using a single crochet stitch for your project. After you finish your first row of single crochets and reach the end, you need to turn your work before beginning the next row.
To do this, gently rotate your crochet piece away from yourself so the side that was facing you is now facing the other direction. Before starting the next row, remember to make your turning chain. For a single crochet, you usually make one chain stitch before turning. This gives your next row enough space to begin.
You will repeat this process at the end of every row. As your project grows, you will keep turning your work again and again.
When I first learned to turn my work, I sometimes forgot which direction to turn or forgot my turning chain. I learned that checking each step carefully helps keep my rows even and neat.
Steps to Remember:
Finish your row of stitches
Make your turning chain (for single crochet, chain 1)
Turn your work away from yourself
Start crocheting across the new row
Repeat at the end of each row
Tips for Beginners:
✔ Remember your turning chain
✔ Turn the same way each time
✔ Count your stitches if your rows look uneven
✔ Practice slowly and check your work
Olivia’s Tip: Turning your work may seem like a small step, but small steps help your project grow row by row!
