Beginner Project: Make Your First Comfort Square

Now that you have learned some basic crochet skills, it is time to create your first project! A comfort square is a great beginner project because it uses simple stitches and helps you practice what you have learned. Comfort squares can also be joined together to make blankets, or they can be donated to help bring warmth and comfort to others.

This project is special to me because I want to use crochet not only for creativity, but also for kindness. Small projects can grow into something bigger and make a difference for someone else.

For this project, we will use chain stitches and single crochet stitches.

Materials Needed:

Medium yarn

Crochet hook

Scissors

Crochet needle

Steps:

Step 1: Make your starting chain by creating about 15–20 chain stitches. Your number does not need to be perfect. It will simply decide how wide your comfort square will be.

Step 2: Start your first row by adding one extra chain stitch, then insert your hook into the second chain from your hook and begin making single crochet stitches across the row.

Step 3: Turn your work when you reach the end of the row, make one chain stitch, turn your work away from yourself, and begin your next row.

Step 4: Continue building rows by repeating the same steps over and over until your work starts to look like a square.

Step 5: Finish your project once your square looks even on all sides, finish off your work by cutting your yarn and weaving in the ends.

When I made one of my first projects, I learned that even simple stitches can turn into something meaningful. One stitch may not seem like much, but many stitches together can create something warm and special.

Tips for Beginners:

✔ Don’t worry if your edges are not perfect

✔ Count your stitches if your rows look uneven

✔ Count your rows

✔ Keep practicing

✔ Be patient with yourself

✔ Have fun creating

Olivia’s Tip: Every big project starts with one stitch. Keep going because your small stitches can grow into something amazing!
