A single crochet is one of the most common stitches in crochet and is also one of the first stitches many beginners learn. Even though it is called a “single crochet", you can use it to create many different projects like scarves, blankets, comfort squares, and more. Once you learn this stitch, you can start building many fun projects.
First, begin with your row of chain stitches. After making the number of chain stitches you want, add one extra chain stitch at the end. This extra chain helps your work turn and gives you room to start the next row.
Next, insert your hook into the second chain from your hook. When you look closely at your crochet chain, you will see little shapes that look like the letter “V.” Insert your hook under one side of the “V.”
Now bring your hook under the working yarn and pull the yarn through the stitch. This step is called a yarn over. Turn your hook toward yourself and pull the yarn through the first stitch. You should now see two loops on your hook.
Finally, yarn over one more time and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. Congratulations! You just made your first single crochet stitch!
When I first started learning single crochet, I sometimes forgot which chain to start in or accidentally made stitches too tight. I learned that slowing down and checking each step made a big difference.
Steps to Remember:
Make your row of chain stitches
Add one extra chain stitch
Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook
Yarn over
Pull through the first stitch
You should now have two loops on your hook
Yarn over again
Pull through both loops
Tips for Beginners:
✔ Count your stitches carefully
✔ Keep your hands relaxed
✔ Make sure your stitches are not too tight
✔ Take your time and practice slowly
Olivia’s Tip: When I was learning single crochet, I realized mistakes are okay because every stitch helps you get better. Keep practicing and don’t give up!
