Lesson 2: How to Make a Slip Knot

A slip knot is usually the very first step when starting a new crochet project. Every crochet project begins with one because it creates the starting loop that goes onto your crochet hook. Think of it as the first tiny step that helps begin something much bigger.

To make a slip knot, first take the beginning end of your yarn and hold the continuing yarn between your middle finger and ring finger. Next, place your index finger inside the loop and twist your finger toward yourself. Then grab a small piece of yarn near the end and pull it through the loop.

You should now see a new loop forming. Gently pull the shorter piece of yarn, which is called the tail end, to make the loop smaller. Slide the loop onto your crochet hook and adjust it so it fits comfortably around the hook. You do not want it too tight or too loose. The hook should still move easily through the loop.

One thing I like about a slip knot is that if you make a mistake, you can easily start over. If you want to undo it, pull both ends of the yarn and it should come apart without leaving a knot behind.

When I first learned how to make a slip knot, it felt a little tricky because my fingers did not always cooperate. After practicing a few times, my hands started remembering the steps. Now it feels much easier.

Steps to Remember:

  1. Hold the yarn and create a loop

  2. Put your index finger inside the loop

  3. Twist the loop toward yourself

  4. Pull a small piece of yarn through

  5. Pull the tail end to tighten the loop

  6. Place the loop on your crochet hook

Tips for Beginners:

✔ Keep your hands relaxed

✔ Make sure the loop can slide on the hook

✔ Don’t pull the yarn too tightly

✔ Practice a few times if it feels difficult

Olivia’s Tip: Don’t worry if your first slip knot doesn’t look perfect. I had to practice mine too. Every crochet project starts with one small loop!
