Learning how to hold a crochet hook is one of the first steps in crochet. When I first started, I thought there was only one correct way to hold it, but I learned that people hold their crochet hooks in different ways. The most important thing is finding a way that feels comfortable and natural for you.
For me, I place my thumb near the middle of the crochet hook where it feels easiest to control. I use my index finger to help guide my work, and the rest of my hand rests near the end of the hook to help keep it steady. This makes it easier for me to move the hook smoothly while making stitches.
How you hold your yarn can also be different for everyone. I like to wrap my yarn once around my other index finger because it helps me control the yarn and keep the tension steady. I then hold my work with my thumb and middle finger while I crochet.
When you are learning, it might feel strange at first, and that is completely okay. My hands felt a little awkward in the beginning too. Crochet is like learning a new skill such as riding a bike, playing piano, or figure skating. The more you practice, the more natural it starts to feel.
Tips for Beginners:
✔ Hold the hook in a way that feels comfortable
✔ Try not to grip too tightly
✔ Keep your hands relaxed
✔ Practice a few minutes every day
✔ Remember that everyone learns at their own pace
Olivia’s Tip: Don’t worry if your hands feel awkward at first. Mine did too! Keep practicing because every crocheter starts with their very first stitch.
